British Liberalism

…The 19th century is said to be the age of liberalism, but the specific development of liberalism differed depending on the historical conditions of each country, and its relationship with other social ideologies such as democracy, socialism, and nationalism also changed according to the stage of history. British liberalism, which originated in 18th century Whiggism, successfully adapted to the new social conditions brought about by the Industrial Revolution through the so-called philosophical radical movement that inherited J. Bentham's utilitarianism and Ricardian economics. Its development from the Electoral Law Reform of 1832 through the repeal of the Corn Laws (1846) to the second Electoral Law Reform (1862) liberated the political process from the monopoly of the landed aristocracy and gradually achieved the bourgeoisie's political goal of realizing the freedom of capital and labor within the framework of a parliamentary system, and established a typical liberal state. …

…19世紀は自由主義の時代といわれるが，自由主義の具体的な展開過程は各国のおかれた歴史的条件によって異なり，民主主義，社会主義，ナショナリズムなど他の社会思想との関係も歴史の段階に応じて変化してきた。　18世紀のホイッグ主義に起源を有するイギリス自由主義は，J.ベンサムの功利主義とリカード経済学とを継承したいわゆる哲学的急進主義の運動を通じて，産業革命のもたらした新しい社会状況への適応に成功した。1832年の選挙法改正から穀物法撤廃(1846)を経て第2次選挙法改正(1862)に至るその展開は，政治過程を土地貴族勢力の独占から解放し，資本と労働の自由を実現するというブルジョアジーの政治課題を議会制の枠組みの中で漸進的に達成し，典型的な自由主義国家を成立せしめた。…
