Lamium - Let's dance

Japanese: オドリコソウ - おどりこそう
Lamium - Let's dance

A perennial plant of the Lamiaceae family (APG classification: Lamiaceae). The stem is square, erect, 30-60 cm tall, and produces thin runners from the base. The leaves are opposite, broadly ovate, 5-10 cm long, coarsely sawtoothed, long and pointed at the tip, and heart-shaped at the base. White or pale pink flowers bloom in the leaf axils in April (June in mountainous areas). The calyx has five lobes and needle-like lobes. The tubular part of the corolla faces upward, is constricted at the base, and has a ring-like hair on the inside. The upper lip is helmet-shaped with hair on the edge, and the lower lip protrudes forward and spreads, with small thorn-like side lobes. The Japanese name comes from the likeness of the flower to a dancer wearing a hat. This is a spring plant, and the above-ground parts die in early summer. It is not appropriate to use it as a summer seasonal word in haiku poetry. It grows in clusters along roadsides and in the shade of bushes in the mountains and fields, and is distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu, Korea, China, and Karafuto (Sakhalin). There are 24 species in the world in the Lamium genus, distributed in Eurasia and Africa. Other species in the same genus include Lamium amplexicaule, and Lamium purpureum L., an introduced plant.

Loxocalyx ambiguus (Makino), which grows in deep mountains, has an overall appearance similar to that of a dead nettle and was once classified as part of the Dead Nettle Genus, but is now classified as part of the Dead Nettle Genus.
