Japanese: 光励起 - ひかりれいき

It refers to exciting molecules (including atoms, ions, and quasiparticles) to a specific energy state by absorbing electromagnetic waves. In a narrow sense, it refers to the method of changing the population number of Zeeman sublevels by irradiating light (optical pumping). In a broader sense, the main incident light in processes such as nonlinear scattering, optical mixing, and optical parametric effects is called excitation light. In order to effectively change the population numbers N ₁ and N ₂ of two energy levels W ₁ and W ₂ by the electromagnetic wave ħω＝ W ₂ - W ₁ (ħ is the Planck constant divided by 2π, and ω is the angular frequency), the number of photons absorbed per unit time must be greater than the number of molecules that return to their original state by relaxation.

電磁波を吸収させることによって，分子(原子，イオン，準粒子なども含める)を，特定のエネルギー状態に励起することをいう。狭義には，ゼーマン副準位の分布数を，光を照射して変化させる方法(光ポンピング)を指す。また広い意味では，非線形散乱，光混合，光パラメトリック効果などの過程において，主たる入射光を励起光という。　二つのエネルギー準位W₁,W₂に共鳴する電磁波ħω＝W₂－W₁によって(ħはプランク定数を2πで割ったもの，ωは角振動数)，それぞれの分布数N₁,N₂を有効に変化させるためには，単位時間当りに吸収される光子数が，緩和によって元の状態にもどる分子数より大きくなくてはならない。
