Japanese: 鉄道連絡船 - てつどうれんらくせん（英語表記）railway ferry

A special vessel operated to connect railway stations on two landmasses separated by a relatively short body of water such as a strait. A ferry is also sometimes simply used to refer to a route operated directly by a railway company. Generally, a ferry operates on a timetable that connects with railway trains at both ends, so the vessel must have high speed and excellent sea resistance. Many ferry ferries are equipped with rails inside the vessel and are used to transport railway cars. In this case, the vehicle deck is above water, so the vessel has a special shape with a relatively high center of gravity. In Japan, regular routes operated by JR and the vessels they use are called railway ferries, and some do not have railways at either end.

海峡のような比較的短距離の水域をはさんで相対する2つの陸地の鉄道の駅から駅を連絡する目的で運航される特殊船舶。また単に鉄道企業が直営する航路を鉄道連絡船と呼ぶこともある。一般に両端の鉄道列車運転に接続する時刻表で運航されるため，これに適した高速性能，耐浪性のすぐれた船であることが要求される。船内に軌条を設け，鉄道車両をそのまま収容して航送する車両航送船の形態をとるものも多い。この場合，車両甲板が水面上になるため，重心の比較的高い特殊な船型となる。日本では JRの経営する定期航路とその使用船舶を鉄道連絡船と称し，両端に鉄道をもたない場合もある。
