Receptaculites

Receptaculites
A genus of fossils found only from the Ordovician to Devonian periods, whose higher taxonomic position is unclear. In the history of research, it has been interpreted as belonging to various widely different classes, such as calcareous algae, foraminifera, sponges, corals, and echinoderms, but it is currently considered to be the marine animal closest to Porifera. The external shape of the skeleton is cup- or dish-shaped, with hexagonal bone fragments regularly arranged on the surface to form a wall, and inside this a columnar structure with four branches has developed. The bone fragments are somewhat similar to those of sponges, but the overall structure of the skeleton is different, and it is unclear whether it had the groove system characteristic of sponges.
