This mountain range forms the backbone of the Italian peninsula, stretching from Liguria near the French border to Calabria at the southern tip. It extends 1,350 km and has an elevation of 1,500 to 2,000 m. The highest point is Mount Corno (2,912 m) in the center. It is the source of the rivers on the peninsula, and while there are many short rivers on the east side, there are rivers with relatively complex flow paths, such as the Arno and the Tiber, on the west side, and the climate is very different between the east and west of the mountain range. Volcanic activity is still active at Mount Vesuvius and Mount Etna. In general, it is not very steep, and the range up to around 1,000 m is used for agriculture and livestock, and many railways and roads cross the mountain range.

イタリア半島の背骨をなす山脈で，フランス国境付近のリグリアから南端のカラブリアに及ぶ。延長1350km，標高1500〜2000m。最高点は中央部のコルノ山（2912m）。半島部の河川の水源をなし，東側には短い川が多いが，西側ではアルノ，テベレなど比較的流路が複雑な川があり，山脈の東西では気候が非常に異なっている。ベスビオ山，エトナ山では現在も火山活動が活発。全般にあまり急峻(きゅうしゅん)でなく，1000m付近までは農牧に利用され，多くの鉄道，道路が山脈を横断する。
