It originates from ancient times that were introduced from the continent, but it is elegant and elegant, and is the basis of Japanese patterns. There are many continuous and fixed patterns, such as tortoiseshell patterns, arare patterns (cobblestones), arabesque patterns, shippo patterns, tatewaku (standing waves), tasuki (sash) patterns, diamond patterns, and [ka] patterns, as well as round patterns of flowers and birds. In the early modern period, yusoku patterns were woven or sewn onto the uchikake of samurai, and were sometimes dyed onto kosode (short-sleeved sleeves).

公家の装束や調度，建築などに用いられる文様。他の分野の文様と区別するため近世になってこのように名付けられた。古く大陸から伝わったのが基になっているが，優美で格調高く，日本の文様の基本となっている。連続文様や定型文様が多く，たとえば亀甲文，霰(あられ)文（石畳），唐草文，七宝文，立涌(たてわく)，襷(たすき)文，菱文，【か】文のほか，花や鳥の丸文などがある。近世には武家の打掛に織や縫で有職文をあしらったり，小袖(こそで)などに染めることもあった。
