Since the fiscal year is set and the principle of independent fiscal years exists, it is necessary to establish certain principles as to which fiscal year the national revenues and expenditures should belong. This is called the fiscal year classification, and there are two types of fiscal year classification: the accrual basis classification, which uses the fiscal year in which the facts that cause the revenues and expenditures occur, and the cash basis classification, which uses the fiscal year in which the actual cash transfers occur (for more information on accrual basis and cash basis, see the entry on accrual basis).
