Eastbound - Azumakudari

Traveling from Kyoto to the eastern part of Japan. Also called Kaido Kudari. The specific scope of "Eastern Japan" varies with the era, and sometimes refers broadly to the countries east of Mount Osaka in Omi Province, all the way up to Michinoku, making it difficult to define clearly, but its center is the present-day Kanto region. However, after the Kamakura period, the meaning of "East" changed, and it came to refer to the location of the shogunate, and the downward movement from Kyoto to Kamakura or Edo was exclusively referred to as "Eastern Kudari."

京都から東国方面へ下向(げこう)すること。海道下りともいう。「東国」の具体的範囲は時代によって異なり、広くは近江(おうみ)国の逢坂(おうさか)山より東の国々から、陸奥(みちのく)までをさす場合もあり、明確に規定しがたいが、その中心は現在の関東地方である。ただし、鎌倉時代以降は「東(あずま)」の意味に変化が生じ、幕府の所在地をいうようになり、京都から鎌倉、江戸への下向を、もっぱら東下りといった。
