Car retarder - Car retarder (English spelling)

A device that automatically controls the speed of freight cars being sorted in a freight yard's hump yard. A hump yard is a yard with a small hill (hump).

When freight cars are sorted by destination at a hump yard, they are separated at the top of the hump and run downhill to be sorted into the direction tracks designated for their destinations. In the past, to stop the transferred freight cars at the appropriate position on the sorting line, the shunting staff stood on the side of the freight cars and applied the brakes by stepping on the brake stick with their feet, but this required many staff and was dangerous in terms of preventing injury accidents. Car retarders are equipped with brake girders on the left and right sides of the rail, and apply the brakes by clamping and tightening the wheels of the freight cars from both sides. Depending on the operating power method, car retarders can be divided into pneumatic car retarders, electromagnetic car retarders, hydraulic unit car retarders, etc.

貨車操車場のハンプヤードで仕分け中の貨車の速度を自動的に制御させる装置。ハンプヤードとは小高い丘（ハンプ）が築かれた操車場をいう。

　ハンプヤードにおいて貨車を目的地別に仕分けする場合、ハンプ頂上で切り離された貨車は下り勾配(こうばい)を走りながら、行先別に定められたそれぞれの方向別線に仕分けされる。転送貨車を仕分け線の適切な位置に止めるため、従来は入換え作業を行う係員が貨車の側面に乗って制動桿(かん)を足で踏むことによりブレーキをかけていたが、多くの係員を要し、かつ作業内容に傷害事故防止上危険なものがあった。カーリターダーは、レールの左右に制動桁(けた)を取り付け、貨車の車輪を左右から挟み込み締め付けることによって制動を行う。操作動力の方式により空圧式カーリターダーのほか、電磁式カーリターダー、油圧ユニット式カーリターダーなどに分けられる。
