A type of organic mercury. A general term for halogenated compounds in which an alkyl group is bonded to mercury. Methylmercury, which belongs to this group, is believed to be the cause of Minamata disease. Ethylmercury also exhibits similar symptoms and has a different toxicity to other organic and inorganic mercury. Contamination of fish and other organisms by methylmercury has become a problem, but there is much debate about the route of contamination. Certain microorganisms are known to convert inorganic mercury to methylmercury, and the reverse reaction is also known.
