…The coastal plain and the surrounding hills, which extend slightly from Cyrenaica in the east to Tripolitania in the west, are relatively fertile areas with good rainfall, and most of the population is concentrated here. The Akhdar Mountains (al-Jabal al-Akhḍal, 500-600m above sea level), which run along a peninsula jutting out into northern Cyrenaica on the eastern side of the Gulf of Sidra, are a forested area with an average annual rainfall of 400-500mm in the highlands, where wheat, olives, and other crops are cultivated and where cattle and goats are pastured. The hills around the mountains are semi-desert steppe areas with little rainfall. …
