...In the 1960s, against the backdrop of the obvious recovery of the Japanese economy, gekiga, which had a dark anger that contrasted with the cheerful mood that ran through society's surface, first appeared in rental bookstores and later in weekly boys' magazines. Shirato Sanpei's Ninja Bugeicho (17 volumes, 1959-62), which centers on peasant uprisings, and Mizuki Shigeru's Devil Boy (2 volumes, 1964), which depicts the evil forces that dominate the modern world, are representative works of gekiga that were sent to rental bookstore readers who had grown up on picture-story shows. In terms of drawing technique, as Tatsumi Yoshihiro, who coined the term, said in his book Gekiga Daigaku (1968), the distinctive feature of gekiga is the use of many frames to depict one action, which is similar to high-speed film. ...
