Acta Sanctorum

...This field of study, which distinguishes between legend and fact through historical criticism, was established in the 17th century by the Benedictine monks, especially the monks of the Saint-Maur, and by the Jesuit Heribert Rosweyde (1569-1629). Rosweyde's work was continued by the Jesuit Jean Bolland (1596-1665), who produced a vast collection of saints' lives (Acta Sanctorum), which is still being studied today by the Bollandist Society, which honors Bolland's name. As a result, the existence of saints, who had long been the object of faith, is often denied.
