Born: December 14, 1883 in Tanabe, Wakayama [Died] April 26, 1969. Founder of Aikido. At the age of 18, he moved to Tokyo to study Tenjin Shinyo-ryu Jujitsu under Tozawa Tokusaburo. After serving in the military, he returned home and studied Kodokan Judo under Takagi Kiyoichi. In 1915, while settling in Hokkaido, he studied under Takeda Sokaku, the founder of the revival of Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu. He also studied other ancient styles such as Shinkage-ryu and Yagyu-ryu. In 1920, he converted to Omotokyo and experienced the state of unity between god and man, which led him to advocate Aikido as the "way of god and man and Aikido." In 1927, he was invited by Admiral Takeshita Isamu, a member of the Kodokan council, to move to Tokyo, where he established a dojo and paved the way for the school's current prosperity. For his achievements, he was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 1960, the Order of the Rising Sun, Fourth Class, in 1964, and the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Third Class, in 1969.
