The Great Depression of 1929 caused great damage to Chile, an exporter of primary products, and the Ibáñez government collapsed in 1931, leading to continued political turmoil, but Chilean politics stabilized after the second Alessandri administration in 1932. From this period, Chile abandoned the free trade system and adopted protectionism, and the Popular Front government of Pedro Aguirre Cerda (1879-1941), which came to power in 1938, actively promoted a policy of domestically producing industrial products that had previously been imported, and by the 1950s had achieved some success. As a result, national industrial capitalists, the middle class, and the working class grew, but because of the small population of the country, demand for industrial products did not grow as expected, and agriculture stagnated because the old land system was not touched, and the economy stagnated in the late 1950s, with chronic inflation and a serious balance of payments deficit caused by increased food imports. ...

…　29年の世界大恐慌は一次産品の輸出国であるチリに甚大な被害をもたらし，イバニエス政権は31年に崩壊，政治的混乱が続いたが，32年アレサンドリ第2次政権以降，チリの政治は安定した。この時期からチリは自由貿易体制を捨てて保護主義を採用し，38年に発足したアギーレ･セルダPedro Aguirre Cerda(1879‐1941)の人民戦線政権は，従来輸入にたよっていた工業製品を国内で生産するという政策を積極的に推進し，50年代までにある程度の成果をあげた。この結果，民族産業資本家，中産階級，労働者階級の成長がみられたが，国内の人口が少ないため，工業製品も期待したほどには需要が伸びず，また農業も古い土地制度に手をつけなかったため停滞して，50年代後半に経済は行きづまり，慢性的インフレ，食糧輸入増による国際収支の赤字などが深刻化した。…
