She was active in a wide range of fields, from Shakespeare, Chekhov, and Ibsen to modern plays at the Old Vic Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company, and others. She was made a Dame in 1956. In 1962, the Ashcroft Theatre was established in her birthplace. In 1984, she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film A Passage to India.
