Year of birth: Unknown She was one of the first women to become nuns in Japan in the second half of the 6th century. She was the daughter of Nishikiori Tsubo. Her real name was Ishiuri (Ishiuri). When Zenshinni, the daughter of Kurabe no Shimada, became a nun in 584, she and Zenzoni became nuns as her disciples. At the request of Soga no Umako, she lived in the Sakurai dojo, but suffered the persecution of the Buddha being destroyed, and was imprisoned and whipped in Kaisekiryu City (Sakurai City). Umako petitioned the Emperor, and they returned to the dojo. Later, the three nuns requested to be ordained by a precept master, and traveled across the sea with the Baekje envoys returning to Japan in 588, where they received the great precepts and returned to Japan in 590 (according to the Gangoji Engi). At the request of the three nuns, Umako built Hoshi-ji Temple (also known as Hōkō-ji Temple, Gangō-ji Temple, and Asuka-dera Temple). The temple of the three nuns later developed into Toyoura-dera Temple (also known as Kenkō-ji Temple). (Yumi Matsuki) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
