?‐353 Roman usurper emperor. Reigned 350-353. Born of a barbarian tribe, he joined the Roman army and rose to prominence, becoming a general. In 350, he rebelled at Augustodunum (now Autun), had Emperor Constans assassinated, and falsely proclaimed himself emperor, ruling over the western part of the empire, mainly in Gaul. However, he came into conflict with Constantius II due to his failure in financial policy and preferential treatment of pagans, and was defeated at the Battle of Mursa in 351. Two years later, he committed suicide in Gaul. [Kinji Hidemura] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
