Jan Toorop

1858‐1928
Dutch painter. His full name was Johannes Theodoor T. He was born in Java and was of English, Dutch and Javanese descent. He studied at the Academies in Amsterdam and Brussels, and started out with an impressionist style of painting. After he became a member of the "Les Bains" (The Group of Twenty) in 1885, he deepened his ties with Belgian symbolist painters and literary figures, while also assimilating the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites and Braque during several stays in England, laying the foundations for symbolist painting in the Netherlands.

オランダの画家。正式名はヨハネス･テオドールJohannes Theodoor T.。ジャワ島の生れでイギリス，オランダ，ジャワの血をひく。アムステルダム，ブリュッセルの両アカデミーで学び，印象主義的画風から出発する。1885年に〈レ･バン(二十人組)〉の一員となって以後は，ベルギーの象徴主義的画家や文学者との交流を深める一方，数度のイギリス滞在を通じてラファエル前派やブレークの影響を消化してオランダにおける象徴主義絵画の礎を築いた。
