box-office poison

Japanese: box-office poison(英語表記)boxofficepoison
box-office poison

...In a broad sense, the film industry, including bank financing and the film market, is all governed by box office value. In Hollywood, the term "box office" is also used to refer to stars, and stars who cannot draw in audiences (or who drag down the success of a film) are called box office poison. Early Bette Davis and Marlene Dietrich after "Spain Rhapsody" (1935) were given this name, in contrast to "money-making star." ...

From [Star]

...A star, in the sense of a brilliant presence that shines like a star, refers to a "star" in film, sports, and other fields. In film, a star is an actress or actor who can gain popularity with the masses simply by their screen presence, regardless of their innate talent or acting ability, as seen in the movie capital of Hollywood. They are the ones who guarantee the highest commercial success of a film, that is, they boast the highest "box-office production value," and are often more popular than the film itself (although sometimes a star's name alone becomes so popular that only his or her performance fee increases, resulting in a decline in the box-office performance of the film; such a star is called a "box-office poison of the film industry" in Hollywood). Therefore, a star does not first have a script and then plays a role; on the contrary, a film is planned for the star, a role is thought up, a script is written, and a film is made to suit the star.
