German psychiatrist. After studying under Wernicke and then Kraepelin, he became professor at the University of Tübingen in 1906. He is best known for his research on paranoia. In 1914, he was in charge of the psychiatric evaluation of a mass murderer known as "Deputy Principal Wagner." Based on his long-term analysis, he argued that paranoid delusions develop psychologically and intellectually from specific personality structures and specific experiences, and established the idea of paranoia as a personality reaction. After World War I, there was a debate over whether war neurosis was organic or psychogenic, but he maintained the theory of traumatic hysteria and worked hard to establish the psychogenic theory of neurosis.

ドイツの精神医学者。ウェルニッケ，ついでクレペリンに師事したのち，1906年からチュービンゲン大学の主任教授をつとめた。業績のなかではパラノイア研究が有名で，14年〈教頭ワーグナー〉の名で知られる大量殺人犯の精神鑑定を担当し，長期間にわたるその分析をもとに，パラノイアの妄想が特定の人格構造と特定の体験から心理的･了解的に発展することを説いて，人格反応としてのパラノイアの考え方を定着させた。第1次大戦後，器質性か心因性かで論争の的だった戦争神経症についても，外傷ヒステリーの説をつらぬき，神経症の心因論確立に力をつくした。
