warp ikat (English spelling) warpikat

...the simplest technique for making ikat threads is the so-called knotted ikat, or ikat technique. Depending on how the ikat threads are used, they are divided into (1) warp ikat, (2) weft ikat, (3) warp and weft ikat (where the warp and weft ikat threads form separate patterns), and (4) double ikat (where the warp and weft ikat threads overlap to form a single pattern). Furthermore, ikat threads that are simply hung down, as seen on the loincloths of primitive people, are called (5) proto-ikat. As a patterned weaving, it is extremely simple, consisting of a plain weave of ikat threads, and is widely distributed around the world, including Egypt, India, Persia, Turkestan, Southeast Asia, China, Japan, and Central and South America.
