...Speaking of tradition, since both realistic realism and unrestrained fantasy were characteristics of Flemish art, it is no wonder that Belgium produced such masters of surrealism as Magritte and Delvaux. On the other hand, since Victor Servranckx (1897-1965) exhibited Belgium's first abstract paintings in 1917, abstractionism by Louis van Lint (1909-) and others has also been a strong force in recent years.
