Juan Bosch

1909‐2001
Dominican writer and politician. He is well known in Latin America as an anti-communist left-wing politician and writer. He lived in exile for a long time during the dictatorship of Trujillo. After Trujillo's assassination in 1961, he returned to the country, won the presidential election in 1962, and became president in 1963, but was forced to resign seven months later due to right-wing unrest and was forced into exile. In 1965, a popular movement calling for the restoration of democracy seemed likely to succeed, but the revolution was suppressed by military intervention by the United States, and Bosz issued a statement strongly criticizing the United States.

ドミニカ共和国の作家で，政治家。反共左派の政治家として，また作家として，ラテン･アメリカではよく知られている。トルヒーヨの独裁政治時代には長期にわたる亡命生活を続けた。1961年トルヒーヨの暗殺後帰国，62年の大統領選挙で勝利し，63年大統領に就任したが，7ヵ月後，右派の騒乱によって辞任に追い込まれ，亡命を余儀なくされた。65年，民主主義の復活を求める民衆運動が成功するかに見えたが，合衆国の軍事介入によって革命が抑圧され，ボシュは合衆国をはげしく非難する声明を発表した。
