...This stagnation continued long into the 19th century. The only representative painter of the 18th century was Cornelis Troost (1697-1750), a witty genre painter known as the Dutch Hogarth. In this century, however, Delft pottery, silverware, glass and other crafts achieved remarkable results by continuing and developing the traditions of the 17th century. It was not until the mid-19th century, when realist painting was on the rise in France, that attempts to reinterpret the traditions of 17th-century painting with new sensibilities and techniques finally began to emerge in the Netherlands.
