A coordinate system that rotates around an axis relative to an inertial coordinate system. For example, a coordinate system fixed to a merry-go-round. A coordinate system fixed to the Earth is also a rotating coordinate system if rotation is taken into account. The equations of motion that determine the motion seen from a rotating coordinate system are the force terms of Newton's equations of motion plus three types of apparent forces (centrifugal force, Coriolis force, and lateral inertial force. → Inertial forces). These apparent forces are caused by the rotation of the coordinate system. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
