In Japan, what are commonly called skinks belong to the genus Eumeces , and six species are found in the genus, including the Japanese skink E. latisctatus (illustration) found in Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu and the surrounding islands, the Okada skink E. okadae found in the Izu Islands, the Okinawa skink E. marginatus found in the Ryukyu Islands, and the Barbarian skink E. barbouri found in the Ryukyu Islands.
