Looking at the origin of the modern Japanese word “ai” (love), this word was added to the vocabulary of the intellectual class in ancient times, carrying its original Chinese meaning and its incompatible Indian Buddhist meaning, but it had a rather vulgar feeling throughout the Middle Ages and early modern times, and in the Meiji period it was used as a receptacle for the modern European words “love,” “Liebe,” and “amour,” threatening the status of “omoi” (feelings) and “koi” (love).
