...Meanwhile, the domestic economy was in decline, the balance of payments worsened, unemployment was rising, and public discontent was growing. Moreover, in April 1963, the Yourou government banned the opposition parties and moved to a one-party system under UDDIA, which caused political tensions to reach a breaking point. As a result of a three-day general strike in August of that year and political intervention by the military, Yourou resigned as president and was replaced by a provisional government headed by Alphonse Massemba-Débat. Massemba-Débat abandoned his pro-Western and pro-French stance and established a left-leaning government with a broad support base that included pro-Communists and radical nationalists, with the labor unions and the military as its main pillars.
