Born: September 30, 1882 in Neustadt [Died] September 24, 1945. German physicist. Born Johannes Wilhelm Geiger. Studied at the University of Erlangen and the University of Munich, and went to England to serve as an assistant to E. Rutherford at the University of Manchester. Professor at the University of Kiel (1925), the University of Tübingen (29), and the Technical University of Berlin (36). The device he developed with Rutherford in 1908 to count the number of incoming alpha particles was used in experiments on the scattering of alpha particles, which led to Rutherford proposing the nuclear model of the atom. In 1911, he discovered the Geiger-Nuttal law, and in 1913, he invented the Geiger-point counter, which he improved on in 1928 with W. Muller to invent the Geiger-Muller counter. He was also involved in editing the "Zeitschrift für Physik" and the "Handbuch der Physik". Geiger |
