The third edition of Webster's New International Dictionary of the English Language, published in 1961, was based on the theory of structural linguistics and accepted many idioms that had been considered misused in the past, from the standpoint of descriptive theory, which said that "a dictionary should describe the reality of language as it is, not provide norms." In response to this, the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (1969, revised edition 1982) took the lead in the anti-Webster movement, proclaiming the editorial philosophy that "a dictionary, as the custodian of a language, should be a guide that gives the language precision and refinement." This issue of "objective descriptiveness" versus "normativeness" is often an issue in the process of dictionary editing. ...
