War of Inheritance - War of Inheritance

…the war of 1667-68 in which Louis XIV of France invaded the Spanish Southern Netherlands (Flanders, now Belgium and parts of northern France) to claim sovereignty over the region. It is also called the War of Devolution. France had long advocated the Rhine as a natural border and had sought to annex the region south of the Rhine, but after the death of King Philip IV of Spain (father-in-law of Louis XIV) in September 1665, Louis claimed the region as belonging to his queen, Marie-Thérèse, on the pretext of the ancient customary law of the Southern Netherlands.
