Golden Age

This is the period when Spanish literature was at its most prosperous, roughly speaking covering the 16th and 17th centuries. In Spanish, it is called Siglo de Oro. In painting, Velázquez, El Greco, and Murillo were among the talented artists, while in literature, Cervantes, who wrote Don Quixote, Góngora, the poet of Lonely Planet, Lope de Vega, who perfected the national drama La Commedia, Quevedo, the magician of language, and Calderón de la Barca, the playwright of the immortal play La Vida das A Dream, emerged from this period. The two-century Golden Age is generally divided into the 16th century as the Renaissance period and the 17th century as the Baroque period, when Spain's unique literary arts flourished under the influence of the Counter-Reformation.
