Equine Infectious Anemia - Equine Infectious Anemia
A septicemic disease caused by a virus that infects horses, donkeys, mules, and other equids. There is an acute form accompanied by severe anemia and high fever, but the chronic form, which causes recurrent anemia and fever, is more common. It is incurable. It is one of the legally mandated infectious diseases of livestock, and sick horses are hunted down and slaughtered. Before the war, there were as many as 9,000 cases of the disease in Japan each year, but all were euthanized by law, and there are currently no cases in the country. The causative virus is thought to be closely related to the human AIDS virus, and it is considered an important disease model for AIDS.
