A class action is a type of litigation developed in the United States and is translated as a representative class action, representative party action, collective action, etc. A class action is a system that allows one or more members of a large group of people with a common interest to pursue a lawsuit as a representative party of all the members, and the resulting judgment is binding on all of them, even if they were not actually involved in the litigation, making it possible to resolve disputes between many people at once.

アメリカ合衆国で発展した訴訟方式の一つで，集団代表訴訟，代表当事者訴訟，集合訴訟などと訳される。クラス･アクションは，利害を共通にする多数の者の集団(クラス)のメンバーのうちの1人または数人に，メンバー全員を代表する当事者となって訴訟を追行することを許し，その結果得た判決には，その全員が，たとえ現実に訴訟に関与していなくとも，拘束されるものとして，多数人の紛争を一挙に解決することを可能とする制度である。
