Polyvinyl butyral

...A resin made by reacting polyvinyl alcohol with aldehyde to form an acetal. The two resins in practical use are polyvinyl formal and polyvinyl butyral. (Chemical formula) Polyvinyl alcohol is spun into fibers and acetalized with formaldehyde in the presence of acid to produce the synthetic fiber Vinylon. Polyvinyl formal is also used in sponges, paints, and varnishes for electrical wires in addition to synthetic fibers.
