...the role of the prompter is to stay out of sight of the audience, such as in the wings or behind the props, and to constantly watch the script while closely watching the actors' performances so that if the actor makes a mistake or mispronounces a line, or if he stumbles over his lines, he can immediately whisper the correct line. In modern, traditional Western theaters, there is a space for a prompter in the center of the front edge of the stage, called a prompt box. In Japan, a box was installed at the Tsukiji Little Theater, which opened in 1924, and it was around that time that the foreign word "prompter" became popular.
