A general term for plants of the grass family, such as Miscanthus sinensis, Miscanthus sieboldii, and Imperata cylindrica, that are primarily used for roofing materials. There have been various theories about the origin of the word, such as "the abbreviation of kariya (harvesting shed)" or "meaning kaya (shed)," but according to Kim Sa-yeop, the ancient Korean word for "thread" corresponds to the Japanese word kaya in both vowels and consonants, so it is highly likely that it is based on Korean. [Fukatsu Tadashi] The stems and leaves of kaya were used as fodder for cattle and horses, and as material for charcoal sacks, and especially as roofing material. In the past, it was common for villages to share kaya fields for roofing purposes. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
