Japanese: カヤ(茅∥萱) - カヤ

A general term for plants of the grass family, such as Miscanthus sinensis, Miscanthus sieboldii, and Imperata cylindrica, that are primarily used for roofing materials. There have been various theories about the origin of the word, such as "the abbreviation of kariya (harvesting shed)" or "meaning kaya (shed)," but according to Kim Sa-yeop, the ancient Korean word for "thread" corresponds to the Japanese word kaya in both vowels and consonants, so it is highly likely that it is based on Korean. [Fukatsu Tadashi] The stems and leaves of kaya were used as fodder for cattle and horses, and as material for charcoal sacks, and especially as roofing material. In the past, it was common for villages to share kaya fields for roofing purposes.

ススキ，オギ，チガヤなど，主として屋根をふく材料に用いられるイネ科の植物の総称。古来〈刈屋（かりや）の約〉とか〈上屋（かや）の意〉などその語源について諸説があるが，金思燁によれば〈茅〉にあたる古代朝鮮語が，母音子音ともに日本語の〈カヤ〉に対応しており，朝鮮語に基づく可能性が強い。【深津正】　カヤの茎葉は牛馬の飼料や炭俵の材料のほか，とくに屋根ふき材として用いられた。以前は，屋根ふきのために，部落でカヤ野を共有している場合が多かった。
