...This was the dynasty that ruled France until 1328, when Charles IV died without a direct male heir in the Capetian line, and with this dynasty the history of the French state began.
[Establishment and power base]
Before their accession to power, the House of Capetians had a history dating back to Robert le Fort (?-866), a nobleman from northern France who had migrated from the Rhine region. The second Count of Paris, Eude(s), fought against the Normans to defend Paris and became king of West Francia.
