...The purpose of bodybuilding is to build a well-balanced body by using machines, weights such as barbells and dumbbells, expanders, and body weight. The birth of today's scientific bodybuilding is largely due to Eugen Sandow (1867-1925), born in East Prussia. As a child, he traveled to Italy and saw old nude statues. He was so moved by the beauty of their muscles that he studied anatomy at the age of 18 and developed a training method that corresponded to the function of each muscle.
