...The Muslim invasion of the peninsula gave birth to two unique styles in the northern Christian region between the 8th and 10th centuries: Asturian and Mozarabic. Driven out by Islamic forces, the Visigothic Christians retreated to the northwestern tip of the peninsula and founded the Kingdom of Asturias, where they inherited and developed Visigothic traditions and left behind a group of buildings that were precursors of the Romanesque style, such as Santa María de Naranco (848), which features a stone vault supported by transverse arches and columns.
