Schickard, W.

...This machine was used to perform multiplication and division by lining up sticks with multiplication tables broken down and written on them, and was widely used for practical purposes. Later, around 1823, W. Schickard of Germany attempted to create a prototype calculating machine that combined Napier's multiplication and division mechanism with an addition and subtraction mechanism using gears. This machine has now been restored.
