Ocean current bottle

Japanese: 海流瓶 - かいりゅうびん
Ocean current bottle
Also known as drift bottles. These are artificial drift objects used to learn about the movement of the ocean's surface. They are made of beer bottle-sized glass bottles or plastic. The location and date of throwing are written down, and a postcard for the location and date of picking up is inserted inside. In Japan, Yuji Wada threw 400 of these bottles off the coast of Sanriku in 1893, and later used tens of thousands of drift bottles to study the distribution of ocean currents in the waters around Japan.
