Institute of Developing Economies

Japanese: アジア経済研究所 - あじあけいざいけんきゅうじょ
Institute of Developing Economies

A research institute established with the aim of contributing to the expansion of trade and the promotion of economic cooperation with developing regions through research and studies of these regions. It was established in 1958 as a foundation under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (now the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry), and was reorganized as a special corporation in 1960 with the enactment of the Institute of Developing Economies Act. It was then merged with the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) in 1998 and became its affiliated institute. It was designated as an organization to be relocated by a cabinet decision under the Multi-Polar Decentralized National Land Development Promotion Act enacted in 1988, and in 1999 it moved from Tokyo to Makuhari, Chiba (Mihama Ward, Chiba City). In 2003, the JETRO became an independent administrative institution, and it became its affiliated research institute.

The Institute of Developing Economies (IDE) conducts basic and comprehensive research on the economy and related conditions in the Asian region and other developing countries in general, and also works to collect and organize basic literature, materials, statistical data, etc. related to these regions, and serves as a resource center for developing countries. It also undertakes international research cooperation and research exchanges, such as conducting research commissioned by the United Nations University, accepting overseas visiting researchers, and hosting international symposiums.
