787‐849 A Chinese politician of the Tang Dynasty. A representative of one side of the faction of Niu Li (Niu Sengru, Li Deyu). A native of Zhao Commandery (Ningjin County, Hebei Province). His courtesy name was Wenrao. He was the son of Li Jifu (758-814), who was the prime minister during the reign of Emperor Xianzong. As the son of a distinguished family, he did not wish to take the imperial examination, but instead became a scribe under his father's shadow, and was responsible for drafting imperial edicts as a Hanlin scholar and a Zhongshu Sheren. He served as a Zhexi inspector and a Zhenghuo governor, and later served as prime minister during the Huichang period (841-846) during the reign of Emperor Wuzong. During this time, he was in conflict with Niu Sengru, Li Zongmin, and others over policies toward Tubo and feudal domains for 30 years. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
