A former town in Nishimuro County, central Wakayama Prefecture. It occupies mountainous areas that continue to the Hatenashi Mountain Range on the border with Nara Prefecture, and small settlements are scattered along the Kumano Highway (Nakaheji) that leads to the river valley upstream of the Tonda River. 95% of the land is mountain forest, and forestry is the main industry. 211.95 km2 . 3,883 people (2003). In May 2005, it was incorporated into Tanabe City along with Motomiya Town and Oto Village in Nishimuro County, and Ryujin Village in Hidaka County.
