…The first document mentioning them dates back to the 4th century, when they lived a nomadic life in the steppes of southern Eastern Europe. They were later dispersed by attacks from the Goths in the 5th century and the Avars in the mid-6th century, but in the first half of the 7th century an alliance was formed among the Bulgar tribes who lived mainly in the Azov region and the lower Volga region, and was ruled by Kubrat (reigned 584-642). After his death, this alliance broke up, and in the second half of the 7th century they were conquered by the Khazar Khaganate (Khazar tribe), some of which became tributary states. …
