A frog of the Rhacophoridae family with unusual spawning habits (illustration). Distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, parts of Kyushu, and Sado Island, it lives in forests from low to mountainous areas. It is arboreal and has well-developed suckers on each finger of its limbs. It is about 5-9 cm long, with the female being larger. The dorsal surface of the body is green with varying shades, and in some areas there are many individuals with scattered reddish-brown markings. The spawning season varies from April to July depending on the region, is relatively long, and takes place in still water such as ponds, rice fields, and marshes surrounded by trees. At night, attracted by the male's cries, the female enters the water, and eventually both sexes begin climbing up branches overhanging the water's edge.
