...Of course, the art of the early Sassanid Empire shows the decayed techniques and forms of the Parthians, but it eventually absorbed the realistic art of the Roman Empire, which was its enemy at the time, and established a style and iconography that had precise realism, three-dimensionality, and balanced decorativeness inherited from the Achaemenid Empire. Like the Achaemenid Empire, it was a luxury art centered on the imperial court, and was produced to demonstrate the absoluteness and transcendence of the emperor. It was extremely secular, with almost no religious elements other than the statues of gods granted by the divine right of kingship (God Ormuzd and Goddess Anahita). However, this secular art was beautifully stylized and designed beyond realism, and was accepted by neighboring countries, and was brought to Japan via the Silk Road (Treasures of Shosoin). ...
